Function and Use: The agency collected this information to report to the consumers of air transportation the on time performance of the major domestic air carriers as part of a larger program to report on the overall quality of airline services the carriers provide.
Scope & Content Note: This series contains the scheduled and actual arrival and departure time tables for scheduled domestic nonstop flights by the largest U.S. airlines. A flight was counted as "on time" if it operated within 15 minutes of the scheduled time shown in the airline's Computerized Reservation System (CRS). The Department of Transportation required reports from airlines with at least one percent of the total domestic passenger revenues for scheduled service. From September 1987 to December 1994, the airlines did not report flights that were late or cancelled due to mechanical problems. Since January 1995, airlines reported as late all cancelled or diverted operations. These corporations accounted for more than 90-percent of the revenue: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, America West Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Eastern Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Pacific Southwest Airlines, Pan American Airlines, Piedmont Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Trans World Airlines, US Airways, and United Airlines. While the required reports are for flights to and from any airport with more than one percent of the domestic passenger traffic, the reporting airlines voluntarily submitted reports for all of their flights within the United States and its territories. Each record provides the airline's business name, the flight number, the departure and arrival airports, the scheduled departure and arrival times, the actual departure and arrival times, and the differences between the schedule and actual times.
