Function and Use: The agency created these records to generate statistical information about combat material losses by type of unit and type of action for the period 1968-1970. The statistical data were used to predict potential combat losses and expenditures of equipment and ammunition under various conditions in Vietnam in order to improve supply and resupply efficiency.
Scope & Content Note: The records contain information about the use and the loss of military supplies, such as ammunition and equipment, by unit and by type of combat activity during the Vietnam War. There are four types of records. The records in the Ammunition Expenditure files potentially identify the unit and its major command, weapon code and density, military mission code and intensity, conditions of the incident (terrain, target fire, weather, day/night), date of the action, and rounds of ammunition the unit expended by type of military weapon. The Item Losses file has records that potentially document the major and minor organization, the military supplies lost, date of loss, the cause of loss, the type of mission and intensity, conditions (terrain, weather, visibility), the Corps Tactical Zone, the age, status and disposition of the item, and numerical totals on casualties (killed in hostile action, wounded in hostile action), and on the number of persons (passengers) involved in the loss. The Item Name file contains the full name of the equipment, model number, and federal stock number of items; this information can facilitate searching for item loss records. The fourth file is the Organization Name File that has the name and code for U.S. Army commands identified in this series. This series provides important information about the tactical logistics of conducting the Vietnam War, 1961-1975.
Access Restrictions: Unrestricted
General Note: The agency referred to this system as the Combat Operations Losses and Expenditures Data - Vietnam (COLED-V)
Searching the Organizational Name File will provide codes for the major and minor military organizations. This facilitates access to both the Ammunition Expenditure and the Item Losses files. Searching the Item Name file will provide specific codes for the equipment lost. This facilitates access to the Item Losses file by item type.
