Function and Use: The agency developed this index to provide its headquarters and field offices, other government agencies, media organizations, and the general public with efficient electronic access to original digital as well as scanned images documenting the history of the Pribilof Islands, the nature of the agency's environmental cleanup mission, and the progress of that effort. The index was designed to furnish intellectual access to the images through its informational content.
Scope & Content Note: This series consists of an electronic index encompassing item level identification and descriptive data for the 2,609 images in the series "Photographs of Social and Economic Life, Environmental Conditions and Cleanup Operations on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska" (ARC Identifier 1656105).

Information is organized in a variety of fields relating to photographic origin, form, and content, although there is not always data in every field for every image. Among the fields pivotal for citation and searching purposes are: the agency-assigned image identification number ("File Name"); the brief summary of image content ("Title"); the full narrative caption developed by the photographer, sometimes in conjunction with other agency staff ("Description"); the original date, or best estimate thereof, on which the photograph was taken ("Date"); the island within the Pribilof archipelago, or, in scattered instances, the non-Pribilof locale, where the image was taken ("Location"); the specific environmental cleanup site on St. Paul Island or St. George Island shown in the image, where relevant, with sites covered by the Pribilof Islands Environmental Restoration Agreement Between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the State of Alaska usually identified by Two-Party Agreement (TPA) site number as well as site name ("Site"); and, where relevant, the narrative history of the cleanup site, including information on original use, pollution causes, and the nature, timing, and progress of the remediation efforts ("Site Overview"). These historical entries are highly detailed for many of the nearly five dozen cleanup sites on St. Paul Island and many of the nearly three dozen sites on St. George Island documented in the photographs.

Other fields include: the media classification of the original item appearing in digital form ("Media Type," e.g., photograph in nearly every case, with the exception of a very few map, drawing, and text entries); the media sub-classification of the item as it appears in the digital series ("Sub-Type," e.g., digital); the status, if known, of the image as an original digital photograph or as a scanned version of a film-based photograph ("Originally Digital?"); the digital image format type ("Format," e.g., JPEG or TIFF); the digital image file size expressed in kilobytes or megabytes ("Size"); the name of the original photographer, if known ("Media Creator"); the original photographer's agency or organizational affiliation, if known ("Affiliation"); the agency-assigned number of the disk on which the image was stored at the time of transfer to NARA ("Physical Location"); the institutional source for the original, film-based photograph scanned by the agency ("Source"); and the institutional citation number for the original, film-based photograph scanned by the agency ("Catalogue").
