Function and Use: The agency developed AIMS to support the processing of award recommendations submitted for approval by the Chief of Naval Operations, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and the Secretary of the Navy. These awards consisted of individual awards approved for sailors, marines, and Department of Navy civilians and unit awards approved for Navy and Marine Corps activities. Data from AIMS was used to produce letters about approved awards; certificates; monthly statistics for the Secretary of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations, and the Commandant of the Marine Corps; and various reports including ad hoc reports. Starting in 1999, awards submitted to the Commandant of the Marine Corps were processed on the Marine Corps awards system named the Awards Processing System. Awards for Marines submitted for approval to the Secretary of the Navy continue to be processed on AIMS.
Scope & Content Note: This series consists of three file types containing data about Navy or Marine Corps awards. The file types are the Active file type, the History file type, and the Participating Commands file type. The Active file type includes all data elements used in AIMS for awards submission and approval workflow. The History file type contains a smaller set of data elements associated with approved awards. The Active and History file types contains information about awards and decorations of honor given to military and civilian personnel. The data include the name of the recipient, grade, Social Security Number, award recommended, award approved, and the date of approval. The Participating Commands file type contains information about awards given to units. The data include the name of the unit, award recommended, award approved, date approved, and dates of eligibility. The Active and History file types include records but are not limited to awards from Operation Provide Comfort, 1991 (Kurdish Autonomous Region); Operation Southern Watch, 1992-2003 (Iraq); Operation Deny Flight, 1993-1995 (Kosovo, Bosnia and Hercogovina); Operation Uphold Democracy, 1994-1995 (Haiti); and Operation Desert Fox, 1998 (Iraq).
